Ruth Roman was born in Lynn, Massachusetts, the youngest of three daughters of Lithuanian-Jewish parents Mary Pauline (Gold) and Abraham Roman. When she was young her carnival barker father passed away and left her mother without a choice other than to become a cleaner lady and waitress in order to feed the family. Ruth grew up in a tenement community that was poor in Boston, Massachusetts, where she attended school. She left school after two short years to pursue acting. Her path wasn't without its challenges. When she was in New York, her first task was to pose stills for crime magazines. her dream of performing in the theater she longed for was not available. Following a short stint as a club hat girl after which she decided to come back home and quit her job. She worked as an usherette during the early morning hours and also appeared at the New England Repertory Company by the evening. This was her first acting position that was permanent. She graduated with a degree in drama from Bishop-Lee Theatre School.
